Billie was not a fan of her apartment. Billie was a fan of Penny’s house. It was bigger, and cleaner, and smelled like a home. Most importantly, Penny was usually in it. Right now, Billie and Penny were both in Penny’s house! She was trying to be cool about it though.
Penny, when relieved of the responsibility of children for a weekend, preferred to sleep in as late as possible. In the pre-Billie era that meant forgoing a lot of the typical morning rituals to make it to the truck on time. But, as the smell of coffee wafted up from the kitchen, Penny rolled over and pulled the blanket tighter to her. It was still warm from where Billie was sleeping earlier.
“Going upstairs is worse than Everest” Billie complained, pushing the bedroom door open with her hip as both of her hands were occupied with dispatched mugs of coffee. Penny just smiled, opening her eyes just enough to grab one of the mugs and see the blurry outline of her girlfriend standing by the bed.
“Morning” Penny replied sleepily. Billie let herself smile, even though she wasn’t sure Penny couldn’t see her and crawled back into bed. The two of them sat there in a silence occasionally punctuated by sipping coffee.
“Thank you for putting extra sugar in” Penny said, her voice still hazy with awakening. Billig made a noncommittal noise, but snuggled up closer to Penny. A quiet you’re welcome, I love you. Penny leaned her head on the other woman’s shoulder. If not for the coffee, Billie would have slipped back into sleep right there. Everything was warm and cozy and safe, th food truck pushed out of both womans’ minds for the moment.
Billie chugged the rest of her coffee and placed the mug on the nightstand, freeing up both her arms to snake around Penny’s waist
“We should stay in today, I’m sure Steve will understand” Billie offered, pressing her face into Penny’s chest. She ruffled the dark brown hair and began twisting pieces of it in her fingers.
“Hmm, I don’t think so” Penny responded with a soft smile.
“ Maybe we can go in a little later” Billie offered. She squeezed Penny a little tighter, wanting to linger in bed. “I’ll even text him”
“Oh, he already knows” Penny sighed, setting aside her own mug. She turned, and reciprocated Billie’s arms wrapped around her torso. They pulled each other in tight and close. Penny’s eyelids felt heavy, and the thick comforter combined with her girlfriend’s embrace made her feel like she was being hugged all over. A few more minutes of rest couldn’t hurt, nothing could hurt here.
